Challenge

This site presented a number of challenges and constraints to the prospect of successful tree retention. Part of the site was a former bottle dump with the ground underlain by a layer of peat. The remediation works required in close proximity to a protected tree required some careful consideration and control of works to ensure the impact on retained tree cover was minimised. Geotextiles incorporated into shared driveways, whilst allowing for the installation of services, allowed for excavations to be minimised, with careful grading of soils carefully managed to prevent any negative impacts on tree roots. Ecological constraints also presented challenges to both the design process and on-site construction management, however with the engagement of the client and contractors, the project was successfully completed and represents a quality development for this key north Wales developer.
